Mat Man with Handwriting Without Tears ✏️🎶 We start with the language of lines—big lines, little lines, big curves, little curves—then build Mat Man. I model once with the song, we sit in a circle and everyone adds a piece, then I rebuild while kids draw on whiteboards, and finally we transfer to paper like a directed drawing to the song. All year we remix the song with our Star of the Week’s name and draw that friend for the Star book. | Preschool Vibes

Mat Man time with Handwriting Without Tears ✏️ We build Mat Man using the same big/little lines and big/little curves we use for capital letters and numbers—the blue mat is his body. This routine makes drawing people click: kids remember every part and where it goes, then carry it over to paper. Simple, memorable, and so effective.#onthisday | Preschool Vibes

Mat Man from Handwriting Without Tears is by far the best way I’ve found to teach preschoolers how to draw all the body parts of a person! We use Mat Man all year during our Star of the Week book, inserting each child’s name into the Mat Man song to make it personal and fun. | Preschool Vibes

In our classroom, we use Mat Man from the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum to learn how to draw a person using the same lines and curves found in capital letters. My students adore the catchy song that accompanies this lesson, and we find ourselves singing it throughout the year. It's especially helpful in teaching them to understand and include all parts of the body in their drawings. #handwritingwithouttears | Preschool Vibes

Meet Mat Man, our friendly hero from Handwriting Without Tears® and the Get Set for School™ Pre-K program! Mat Man isn't just a fun character; he's a crucial teaching tool that introduces children to important pre-writing concepts such as size recognition, placement, and sequence skills. Before diving into writing, children must master these readiness skills, which Mat Man helps teach effectively. Additionally, he promotes body awareness, social skills, and sharing. In this video, we explore how

How we learn to draw people (Mat Man HWT) ✏️🎶 We start with Handwriting Without Tears language—big line, little line, big curve, little curve—the same pieces we use for letters and numbers. I model Mat Man on the blue mat with the song, then we build together (each child adds a piece). Next, kids draw on whiteboards to the song (pause between parts) and finally transfer to paper step-by-step. All year, we practice during Star of the Week—we swap in the child’s name in the Mat Man song and draw

This week in preschool, we're focusing on learning how to draw people using "Mat Man" from Handwriting Without Tears. We start by building Mat Man during circle time with a song that highlights each part of his body using big lines, little lines, big curves, and little curves. We practice drawing him on whiteboards and then on paper, which the students will add to their portfolios. Alongside this, our theme for the week explores what makes each person unique, supported by reading "All About Me"

In preschool, we start name writing by focusing on the first letter of each student's name. We begin by building their letter on Mat Man’s blue mat, then progress to tracing and writing it in a dry erase pocket. Students practice tracing first, then try writing on their own within the provided space. We ensure they've mastered this initial letter before moving on to the full name, laying a solid foundation for further handwriting skills.#onthisday | Preschool Vibes

This week, Mat Man is taking over our classroom! He's built from the same big lines, little lines, big curves, and little curves we use for writing capital letters and numbers. Mat Man isn't just fun—he teaches us how to draw a person, emphasizing each body part in his catchy song. This helps our preschoolers remember to include all parts, like the body, legs, and even where they're supposed to go, rather than drawing arms coming out of the head! | Preschool Vibes

Here’s how I teach one letter each week in my preschool classroom! I combine my training in Orton-Gillingham and Handwriting Without Tears into a single large-group lesson. Because we have a half-day schedule with only four large-group lessons per week, this method covers everything we need efficiently: I show students the capital and lowercase letters, demonstrate correct letter formation using Handwriting Without Tears language, practice the letter sound, and explore words that begin with it.
